The Milky Way Lactation consultant: Helping families with breastfeeding is my passion
I am from The Netherlands and trained to become a nurse in the beautiful university city of Groningen.
My interest for breastfeeding started during my practicum at the hospital in San Carlos, Nicaragua. I was amazed at how comfortable the nurses felt about sharing their own breast milk. Bed sharing was normal and on demand feeding was encouraged.
Back in The Netherlands I was fortunate enough to have a full time job as a child and family nurse at a baby clinic for 8 years. During that time I studied to become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. This is the golden standard for professionals supplying breastfeeding support.
Four years ago my husband and I moved to Australia and we live in Toormina. Our son was born in 2012 and even with all my knowledge it was still a challenge to breastfeed him. I had a very low milk supply and had to supplement with formula. Initially breastfeeding was an emotional roller coaster. I stayed positive and managed to increase my milk supply to a hundred percent. This experience inspired me to support others in a similar situations.
